General Telephone Company employees founded General Telephone West Credit Union in downtown Muskegon, Michigan in November 1953. In 2006, the credit union expanded its field of membership by including not just telephone and industrial employees, but by inviting anyone working, living, worshiping, or studying in Muskegon, Ottawa, Oceana, Newaygo, or Kent counties to join.
