CU Profile: New Orleans Firemen’s Federal Credit Union
No, you don’t have to be a firefighter to join the New Orleans Firemen’s Federal Credit Union.
Firemen’s Federal, as it is known, proudly serves underserved communities in 35 parishes and counties across Louisiana and Mississippi, with a long history in both states. It was founded in 1934 by firefighters who pooled their resources for better savings and loan products.
That makes it the second oldest federally insured credit union in the country.
Community Focus
While it is best known within the New Orleans Fire Department, the credit union extends its community focus to all first responders, healthcare workers and educators within its service area, regularly making onsite visits to deliver services in real-time.
Who Can Join?
In addition to current and retired New Orleans firefighters—along with members of certain select employee groups—membership in Firemen’s Federal is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends schools in St. James Parish, LA, Tangipahoa Parish, LA, Plaquemines Parish, LA, certain parts of New Orleans East area, and the City of Picayune, MS.
Why You Should Join
Firemen’s Federal provides a full array of financial service products to communities that have been underbanked and excluded by mainstream financial institutions. These include personalized planning, mobile-first services, and Banzai Courses, which use real-life scenarios to demonstrate the power of good financial planning for kids, teens, and young adults.
“Our goal is not growth, but service to our communities,” the credit union says. “We often refinance bank and other credit union loans when building a bespoke journey for our members to meet their goals.”
Firemen’s Federal’s commitment to the mission of people helping people recently saw them recognized as the Top Winner in the New Orleans CityBusiness 2023 Reader Ranking Awards in the Credit Union category.
With 29,000 members and nearly $250 million in assets, the credit union has more than 5,600 Shared Branching locations nationwide and offers 10 full-service branches throughout Louisiana and Mississippi.
