In 1953, a group of teachers chartered the Northeast Johnson County Teachers’ Credit Union. For more than a decade, membership continued to grow and smaller credit unions were acquired through mergers. In 1979, the credit union expanded its charter to include anyone living, working, or paid by a company in Johnson County, KS. To reflect its changing membership, the credit union’s name changed to The Credit Union of Johnson County. Expansion continued when the charter was changed to include the entire Kansas City Metro Area in 2008. Growth fueled by mergers with smaller credit unions created more convenience for members with the addition of locations in Lawrence, Leavenworth, and Kansas City, Mo. To reflect its new presence outside of Johnson County, the credit union changed its name to Mainstreet Credit Union in February of 2010. Two more mergers added branch locations in in Kansas City, Kansas, and Bonner Springs in the same year. Today, more than 62,000 members from a variety of companies, agencies, professions, and neighborhoods turn to Mainstreet Credit Union for their financial needs.
