A credit union is a cooperative financial institution that is owned and controlled by its members. Credit unions provide financial services to members who share a common bond such as where they work, live, or worship. Unlike banks, credit unions are not-for-profit and are not owned by shareholders. The earnings of a credit union go back to its members in the form of higher dividends, lower loan rates, and lower fees.
